Sometimes, one finds herself in a position where she wants a back button in her application but there is a big, complex engineering problem preventing it from happening. Everyone wants the feature but no one wants the 6-month timeline associated with it. What's a design lead* to do?
Thankfully, one of my engineering lead counterparts had an idea for how to address the issue and a reservoir of patience with which to explain it to me and draw up a plan. Knowing that other non-technical folks may have an equally difficult time understanding, I created this graphic to explain it in non-technical terms.
This became a base from which to have prioritization and strategy conversations across disciplines and leadership levels. As of fall 2025, we had gained enough traction on the back button problem that engineering was able to create a usable prototype to begin tradeoff conversations! This was a five+ year desire/effort from design that had finally begun taking shape! Big win.
